Resources in Mass Effect 2 are collectable minerals that can be used for Research and Upgrades, obtained around different planets or by completing different Missions or Assignments. You can check the required ammount of resources needed to craft a specific Upgrade in Research and Upgrades.

Scanning Planets for Resources

You can scan the planets for minerals from the Normandy SR-2 when it's in orbit, data will display on the side of the screen and then you can move the scanner until the data column reaches it's peak, that will indicate the presence of minerals to the pointed location. By firing a probe at the deposit it will add the minerals to your stores.
