Grunt: Rite of Passage is a Loyalty Mission in Mass Effect 2. Grunt: Rite of Passage is about Grunt's condition as a Krogan. He thinks he is seriously ill so requests a trip to Tuchanka to get a diagnosis. Loyalty Missions grant various benefits in Mass Effect 2, among them, you can name an alternate outfit for the squad member, unlocks the fourth Power of said member and also makes that character loyal, which can be vital for final Mission of the game.

Grunt: Rite of Passage Walkthrough

Getting Ready

During Grunt: Rite of Passage you will face armored Enemies, and most of them try to get up-close and personal with you, so try to bring Powers that counter this, such as Fire-based Powers or Cryo-based ones. If possible, Grunt's Incendiary Ammo upgraded to share with the whole squad is a good idea.

Walkthrough

Head to Tuchanka, and bring Grunt. Once there, talk to the current leader of Clan Urdnot, who is either Commander Shepard's old mate Wrex, or his brother, Wreav

Whoever it is, won't change the fact that Grunt is not actually sick, but he is of the age where he must complete the Krogan rite of passage, and refers the party to the clan Shaman.

The Shaman tells you a lot of information about the rite, Krogan culture and history, etc. A Krogan named Gatatog Uvenk will protest about Grunt taking the rite, as he is not a "true" Krogan because he is tank bred. There are a number of ways to get Uvenk to stand down. Once you accept to be Grunt's krantt (a warrior's must trusted allies for the Krogan), you are sent by the Shaman to the traditional grounds of the rite.

Once there, you learn that you have to activate the keystone near the stairs where you are standing when you enter the area, to begin each of the three waves. BEFORE doing so, take a moment to run bypasses on the turbine parts on either side of the central stairs, loot the Platinum, and the Credits from four dead Krogan on the upper level. You can also find 3 Med-Kits and 2 Power Cells, although it may be advised to leave them there until you need them.

Get all your ammo powers equipped, and hit the keystone to begin the first wave.

The first wave is composed of many Varrens, they all descend upon your party. Since their only attack is melee, you should use range at your advantage to minimize risks. They come from two sides of the map at the opposite corners from the switch,  so don't leave your back unguarded for too long.

Once the Varren are gone, Grunt will start to remind you impatiently to hit the keystone, but before obeying the Krogan, walk around to refill your ammo.

The second wave is composed of Klixen, fire-breathing insectoid species that resemble crabs or beetles. Although they are resistant to Incendiary Ammo and Incinerate, their armor isn't, and you can use Armor-Piercing Ammo, Reave and Warp Ammo to make short work of them. Klixen aren't as fast as Varren, so it won't be hard for you stay away from their fire-breathing attack.

Once there are no more Klixen, Grunt will be eager to continue and prompt you to hit the keystone. Refill your ammo before doing so, and consider the possibility of grabbing the med-kit or the Power Cells, because it won't be easy during the third wave.

The third wave is not what you'd call a wave, it's just a Thresher Maw. The primary objective is simply to survive. If you manage to survive for 5 minutes, the test will be labeled a success, but you can always take it down.

If you manage to take it down, you gain the respect of the Krogan and the rite ends. Keep in mind that the creature can destroy some of the weaker structures, so try to avoid those for cover and go for the sturdier walls instead. Try to shoot at its tongue, as that is the Thresher Maw's weak point.

Once the Thresher Maw is gone, or the timer ends, the Rite of Passage is over, but Gatatog Uvenk and his krantt decide to make an entrance. During the cutscene, Uvenk expresses that regardless of what he thought previously he is actually impressed by Grunt's accomplishment. It doesn't matter what conversation option you decide to take on, the result is the same. Uvenk is accompanied by four Gatatog Warriors. Deal with him first, he has a barrier and armor.

Once they are all down, you will automatically return to the Urdnot Camp and speak to the Shaman. He will welcome Grunt as a full-fledged member of Clan Urdnot and you receive a Shotgun damage upgrade (Synchronized Pulsar). Once the conversation with the Shaman reaches and end, the Mission is over.
